The problem seems to be that the sketchup material created automatically when adding vray material is not added with a texture image (just a solid grey color). When inspecting the material in sketchup's material pannel 'texture > use texture image' tab is turned off (unchecked) and the file location is not set. I've got a fairly interesting problem where vray materials are displaying as grey instead of textured in Sketchup 2015, with vray 2.
